1957 - Elvis Presley made his last appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing many of his hits for over 20 minutes.
1958 - Danny & the Juniors scored a No. 1 single with their hit song, At the Hop.
1958 - Gibson introduced the Flying V, a guitar whose signature modern look reimagined what an electric guitar could look like.
1964 - The Rolling Stones kicked off their first headlining tour with supporting acts the Ronettes, Marty Wilde, and the Swinging Blue Jeans in Harrow, England.
1970 - Crosby Stills Nash & Young debuted live in the UK at Londons Royal Albert Hall.
1971 - Neil Young returned to Canada for the first time since 1965, when he left to join up with Buffalo Springfield.
1975 - Pink Floyd began recording Wish You Were Here as their tribute to departed bandmate, Syd Barrett, on his 29th birthday.
1975 - Over one thousand Led Zeppelin fans rioted after waiting for tickets to go on sale at the Boston Gardens for a February show. The rampaging mob caused $30,000 worth of damage to the lobby of the venue, and Mayor Kevin White consequently cancelled the concert.
1977 - EMI Records dropped the Sex Pistols from their contract, giving the group nearly $70,000 to walk away from their deal.
1993 - Bassist Bill Wyman announced that he was leaving the Rolling Stones.
1993 - Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie died in an Englewood, NJ hospital after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 75.
