Carnegie Hall Hosts Who Tribute Show
The Who were the honorees of a tribute show held in New York City last night (March 3rd). Surprise guest Patti Smith summed up the night aptly, as she addressed the crowd upon taking the stage, "Carnegie Hall, I apologize for what Im about to do.
She then launched into a raging rendition of "My Generation," spitting on the floor at key moments, almost rejecting the very lyrics of the band's signature youth anthem. "Hope I die before I get old," she snarled.
The night, which also served as a benefit for organizations such as Music Unites had its tender moments as well. It was kicked off with a childrens choir performing "Overture" and "Tommy Can You Hear Me" along with the house band.
Living Colour then took the stage, putting a funky metallic sheen on the Who's "Eminence Front." They were then followed by an acoustic cover of "Substitute" by Robyn Hitchcock and the Smithereens taking on "The Seeker" and "Sparks."
Other performances were given by artists including Bettye LaVette, Mose Allison, Beatles cover band Fab Faux and Husker Düs Bob Mould, who tackled "Can't Reach You" from The Who Sell Out.
